Lead Hand

Summary

The Lead Hand oversees one of a series of work cells within the manufacturing plant.  This individual is responsible for maintaining work flow, quality control, safety, and organization within their assigned cell.  The following describes the responsibilities, skills, and expectations of this position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Inspects and measures parts and products to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Directs workers in adjusting machines and equipment to repair products which fail to meet standards.
  • Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules.
  • Develops, recommends, and implements measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product.
  • Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of shop, department, or work crew.
  • Ability to perform light metal work, use hand power tools and measuring tools.
  • Knowledge of shipping and receiving procedures.
  • Maintains time and production records.

Preferred Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Certified to operate a forklift.
  • Knowledge of electrical, plumbing carpentry and construction paint.
  • Experience with fiberglass and/or metal fabrication.

Education and/or Experience

Two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Internet software; Inventory software; Manufacturing software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
